Corn yields are growing with each subsequent year due to the serious work, done to intensify cultivation technologies. In this article, we speak about the factors which influenced the results achieved.

Several years ago, the average corn yields were about 5 tons. Having headed Kusto Agro Farming, Volodymyr Siryi, took several strategically important decisions. Firstly, the technological approach to soil tillage has been changed. Secondly, modern machinery has been purchased, and precision farming systems have been introduced. The result was not long in coming: the third year in a row, crop yields permanently increase. So, according to the last year results, the company reached corn yields of 10.6 tons/ha in standard weight.

Volodymyr Siryi personally went into corn fields to assess crop condition during the vegetation period. The results were good: the stems were twice as high as the average height of a person, corn ears were well filled, and the leaves were healthy and intense green.

Choose the corn hybrid carefully

We paid a lot of attention to corn hybrid selection. Pursuing the objective, we have laid out a large demo field.

“Every seed producer assures that their product is the best. However, different hybrids yield differently in diverse conditions. So, we took a decision to test them in our fields. The company tests various corn hybrids on the area of ​​108 hectares. They are sown in four rows each and are harvested separately. The cultivation technology is the same everywhere: the preceding crop is sunflower, plowing, potassium, and phosphorus application; in spring – moisture closure, nitrogen application, cultivation, PPP application, etc. Our goal is to create similar conditions for different cultivars to grow them and identify those showing the highest yield on our lands and with our cultivation technologies. We have been practicing this kind of internal testing for three years and not only for corn but also for sunflower. Last year, we sowed 54 sunflower and 104 corn hybrids from different producers on our test fields,” says Volodymyr Siryi.

Precision seeding system

Last year, we sow this field using a 16-row Kinze seed drill equipped with precision planting system which automatically turns off the colters at the edge of the field. Using online tools, it is possible to count the exact number of seeds planted per unit area and immediately transfer this data to the company office.

This kind of machinery has the main advantage to sharply cut off the seeds, avoiding damage, and to apply them to the same depth and distance. The approach allows plants more growing space reducing competition. For arable crops, corn, in particular, it is very important.

Monitoring system

To accurately record each hybrid’s productivity in our demo fields, we tested a monitoring system on sunflower and corn fields last year. Pursuing this goal, we purchased additional data transmitters. In the future, the data received by dedicated sensors will be sent online to the company office. Based on the data obtained, the system will generate a map, and it will be possible to superimpose a crops map on it.

When we harvest corn from the demo fields, two indicators are recorded: grain moisture and crop productivity. The experimental areas showed the yield of 170 cwt/ha for some corn cultivars.

Agriculture excludes trivialities. It is crucial to pay attention to everything, starting from seed selection and finishing with crop storage. Exclusively such approach will guarantee good results.
